Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Scope of Position:

  • This position is in the Fiber Capital Programs (FCP) Department within the Advanced Manufacturing Technology group (AMT) and is focused on equipment design, industrialization, deployment, and commissioning.
  • As a member of a project team, provides electrical engineering leadership in the design, build, installation and commissioning of Corning Optical Communications manufacturing systems. Provides technical leadership in all aspects of equipment design for new deployments and modification of existing equipment.
  • Will lead or be a member of a project team responsible for deploying manufacturing equipment to fiber and cable plants through-out North Carolina (US) and in China, India, and Europe. Deployment to these sites is likely.
  • Supervise and provide direction to contract engineering techs, internal maintenance, and outside contract trades during all aspects of equipment installation and conversion such as demolition, construction, installation, testing, and debug of production equipment.
  • Will work closely with the Technology Development, Manufacturing Engineering and Operations groups to industrialize and reduce cost of new equipment designs.
  • Assess condition and usability of existing equipment for fit and function with new installation plans.
  • Work with equipment vendors on build and acceptance of equipment.
  • Create new and modify existing PLC code to achieve desired operation/throughput of new and existing production equipment.
  • Perform troubleshooting, process start-up, design, and documentation of Mechanical and Electrical Systems for new or modified production equipment.
  • Create and modify existing documentation to complete drawing packages, installation checklists, machine part lists, illustrations, and machine specs of production equipment.

Major
Responsibilities:

  • Develop understanding of process and equipment functions in project subject area.
  • Develop and use project plans and timelines to achieve project goals without sacrificing safety, intellectual property, or quality. Adhere to all Corporate, Business Unit, and Site guidelines for same.
  • May either lead or be a member of a project team.
  • Develop project work plans and schedules that support overall project objectives, completes work to agreed-upon timeline.
  • Develop and use project plans and timelines to achieve project goals without sacrificing safety, intellectual property, or quality. Adhere to all Corporate, Business Unit, and Site guidelines for same.
  • Estimate and manage project budgets.
  • Industrialize manufacturing platforms (platform = process
    equipment) for revolutionary manufacturing systems. Update design of manufacturing platforms to resolve safety, performance, and quality issues. Emphasize reduce either the as-installed or long-term operational costs.
  • Re-design control/electrical systems to reduce installation cost, solve equipment interferences, and correct inadequate designs.
  • Design controls logic (PLC & HMI code) to reduce product losses, reduce downtime, simplify operations, increase output, and provide a robust solution.
  • Procure and expedite materials for new or modified equipment installation.
  • Specify or recommend vendors, and maintain close liaison between vendor and plant.
  • Prepare work orders and direct maintenance personnel and outside contract trades in the fabrication, assembly, testing, and installation of equipment.
  • Develop and use mechanical, electrical and process start-up and debug checklists, drawings, and process equipment documentation. May direct technicians to create or modify the same.
  • Provide troubleshooting support during equipment installation and start-up phases, identify root cause and implement corrective actions.
  • Provide training to plant engineers, technicians, maintenance, and operations personnel on the manufacturing platform as part of the turnover to operations.
  • Create, review, and update installation documentation and drawings as required.

Travel Requirements:

  • Up to 75% travel. Travel will be required to Corning Optical Fiber and Cable Manufacturing sites in North Carolina (Concord, Winston-Salem, Hickory, and Wilmington) and overseas sites in India, China, and Europe.
  • Typical travel can range from a few days to a few weeks during the project initiation phase.
  • During the deployment phase of the project, travel is nearly full-time. Deployment phases typically range from 3-9 months, but can extend to 1
    years.

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

  • Standard work hours are M-F 8:
    00-5:
    00, however, overtime or shifted work hours is not uncommon and is indeed expected at times.
  • The amount and duration will vary as a function of the job position, particular project, and point in the project life cycle.

Job Knowledge and Educational Level:

  • BS Electrical Engineering Technology, BS or MS Electrical Engineering.
  • 5-7
    years experience Equipment or software experience preferred:
    AutoCAD , AutoCAD Electrical, Windows, MS Office suite including Power Point, Excel, Word. PLC and PC based systems, Beckhoff PLC / Motion Control, B&R PLC Control, A-B PLC / Motion Control, Automated equipment systems experience.
  • Personnel Directed By This Position:
    Supervise and provide direction to direct and contract engineering, direct and contract techs, internal maintenance, and outside contract trades.
  • Project management experience, including developing project scope, budgets and schedules.
  • Knowledge of regulations applicable to area of expertise and works to ensure compliance (NEC, NFPA70, OSHA, etc.). Incorporates safety and risk analysis into equipment designs.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience working in a manufacturing floor or construction environment, with a strong focus on job site safety. Proactive regarding safety. Seeks to identify and correct potential safety or environmental issues before incidents occur.
  • Familiarity with installation and operation of manufacturing equipment.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes.
  • Displays a bias for action in situations of uncertainty, addresses issues and problems proactively.
  • Translates engineering solutions to requirements, then further to process and/or equipment designs which deliver required performance criteria.
  • Determines and recommends best solution from a series of alternatives within plant guidelines.
  • Thoroughly carries out assignments to completion.
  • Works well in a team environment, is a self-starter and results oriented .
  • Presentation skills highly desirable. Communicates effectively in various settings to provide and present necessary information to Project, Department, and Site leaders.
  • Assures quality and repeatability of processes and products.
  • Able to function in either discipline engineer or multi-disciplined leadership role as defined by project assignment.
  • Works well with other disciplines (IT, controls, and process engineering) to fully understand manufacturing system functionality and design requirements.

This role can be based in either Wilmington, NC Plant or Concord, NC Plant

Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
